CiRecord Indicia Platform

We are currently building a website that will provide an accessible platform for users to submit, view and download biological records. This will make use of the Indicia toolbox, which is used by the UK’s Biological Records Centre for their platform, iRecord. Our system will allow greater sharing of records and knowledge and will be run in collaboration with organizations throughout the Channel Islands.

Data Enquiries

In the meantime, please refer any data-related enquiries to:

data.analyst@gbrc.org.gg

Wildlife recording doesn’t just mean animals! We’re also interested in records of plants, fungi, or whatever you are interested in!

Recording Form

If you would rather record what you see by hand, you can  download a form and send it to us and data.analyst@gbrc.org.gg:

Under reported species

Common species like rabbits, rats and hedgehogs are often under-reported. This is because we are so used to seeing them around that we forget that they are useful for gauging the health of habitats and populations. The map below shows how under-reported rabbits are.

The number of records in this map misrepresents the distribution of rabbits on each of these islands, whereas less common but more enigmatic species tend to be reported more often so we get a better idea of their range or populations.

Rarities

Many species are not residents of the Channel Islands but for some reason may turned up or occasionally pass by. In recent years, rarities have included leatherback turtles, humpback whales and a bearded vulture above Alderney skies. It's very exciting when these species visit and we may receive many reports, even if for the same individual animal. That said, if you think you have seen something, don't hesitate to contact us - sometimes rare sightings represent an individual that has wandered beyond its usual range but they can also be very useful indicators of change!
